Basic Third Season Outfit
No major changes occur with John's basic outfit in the third season.  His pants are a bit darker and in some episodes they have a mauve cast to them, as if they might have been washed with some of those pink long johns.  Otherwise, his shirt, hat, vest, holster, and bandana are all the same.  John's usual sternness seems to soften in the third season.  It is much easier now to catch him smiling.

John's vest and shirt are clearly still the same ones he had in the first two seasons.  It is very rare in the third season to see him without his vest.  He still usually has his long johns on under his shirt, but in "The Legacy" and "Generation", seen below, he has a new set that is much redder than the previous pink underwear.  No doubt this is how those pants ended up with the pink cast to them!

Special Outfits
John has very little wardrobe variety in the third season and no special outfits I am aware of until the very last episode of the season when he suddenly has more clothes changes than he has had in three seasons.  All of these occur in "Too Many Chiefs" when he and Victoria head to San Francisco for a vacation.  With his regular outfit, John has seven different outfits in this episode.

While he is convalescing John wears a maroon and navy bathrobe or dressing gown that we have not seen before.  It is not clear what he is wearing under it.

When John and Victoria travel to San Francisco he wears his tan overcoat.  This is probably the same one he had in the first two season, but it's hard to tell since this is the first we have seen it in the daylight.

Eating out in San Francisco, John wears a new light blue dress shirt.

During his fitting with the tailor he is
shown in a mock-up of the tuxedo he
is being fitted for.

John is shown entering the theater wearing his new tuxedo,
top hat, white gloves, white bow tie, and formal cape.

When John and Victoria arrive back at the ranch John is wearing his dark traveling suit.  This is probably the same suit he wore to Rancho Montoya in the second season.

For dinner back at the ranch John and Victoria entertain the rest of the family by dressing up in their new formal clothes from San Francisco.
