Basic Fourth Season Outfit
John's outfit sees a major overhaul in the fourth season.  He shifts back to the very light pants he had in the second season and for the first time is without his cream colored shirt.  Instead he is in a dark brown shirt for all the episodes of the fourth season.  His bandana changes from faded red to a navy blue one.  Still with him from the pilot are his hat, his vest, and his black holster set.  It doesn't appear that he is wearing long johns under his shirt anymore.

His new dark brown shirt has a similar Western style yoke like the old one, but the seam does not extend across the sleeves. This shirt also has a breast pocket on the left and is not as loose fitting as his cream colored shirt was.  He is often shown wearing it without a vest.

John's vest remains unchanged through the fourth season and throughout the series.  He has a new bandana, but unlike the faded red one he wore off and on for the first three seasons, this one is navy blue, it seems fade-proof and except for the funeral, he is never seen without it.

Special Outfits
John only has a few occasions in the fourth season where he is not in his regular outfit.  These include a rainstorm in "A Man to Match the Land" where he appears in a long rain slicker we have not seen before.  All the hands seem to have a similar article of clothing.  He is also seen in his flashback sheriff's outfit in "The Badge", and once again we see him in his dark suit for the funeral in "New Lion of Sonora".

The photos shown above are from "The Badge", the controversial flashback episode in which John and Buck revisit their post-war encounter some 15 years earlier.  As many of us may have discovered from life experience, it is easier to make someone appear older than to make them appear younger, and many viewers thought the costume/make-up crew missed the mark here with both John and Buck.  But setting aside the age issue, his outfit here as a local Kansas sheriff consists of his old Union Army pants, a rather weather-beaten hat, vest, shirt, and a brown holster set.  The flashback tells us that three months later they were headed to Arizona (where we pick them up in the pilot), so you can see that along with outfitting a wagon for the journey he apparently outfitted himself with a whole new set of duds.

In what ends up being the final episode filmed of the series, John attends the funeral of Don Sebastian and the reading of the will in his dark suit.  We have seen him in this suit for a similar solemn occasion in the second season and as one of his traveling outfits in the third season.
