Basic First Season Outfit |
John's outfit from the pilot
seems to have suited him because it continues through the
first season almost unchanged, unlike the other characters
who had significant costume adjustments after the pilot.
His pants are a lighter shade of grey or sometimes tan,
but his hat, vest, holster, and shirt all appear to be the
same. His bandana seems to be the only addition.
It is hard to tell if his tan overcoat is the same as the
one he wore in the pilot, but it is similar. His
basic ensemble doesn't change much throughout the first
season, even though he assembles it in various
combinations. |

John's most identifiable
clothing item is his cream colored shirt that has a yoke
seam that continues across the sleeves. It is a
heavy, nubby, muslin-like material. It serves as
his basic work shirt, either with or without his caramel
colored vest. It is also his dress shirt for
dinner where he wears it with a black tie and without
the vest. |

While he
rarely appears with his shirt even unbuttoned, it is
still clear in most scenes that he is wearing pink long
johns under the shirt. The only time he is shown
without his shirt in the first season is during a brief
scene in "The Terrorist" when he is in bed wearing his
long johns. |

John's gun belt and holster are
black and this set is larger than the other cast member's.
He wears the holster low,
and almost always tied down. Unlike Mano and Buck
who are rarely without their side-arms, John is
frequently shown not wearing his gun belt. When he
is around the house, working on the books, or at dinner,
he doesn't usually have it on, though he always wears it
when he leaves the ranch or when danger threatens.
Fan Contribution from Luc Inion of
Belgium:
"John uses another type of revolver than Blue and Buck.
John, Buck and Blue all use the Colt Single Action Army
revolver model of 1873. But John’s has the type
with a 7 1/2 inch barrel whereas Blue uses the one with
the 4 3/4 inch barrel. (Buck uses the same one as Blue
but I think he also sometimes uses one with a 5 1/2 inch
barrel). So because John’s revolver is longer he
needs a longer holster and he wears it lower because he
needs more space to get that long barrel out of the
holster."
Thanks so much for this great
insight! |

John's vest, which stays with
him through the first two seasons is caramel-colored
leather with a single string closure. With few
exceptions it is his everyday work vest. He also has
a tan leather overcoat which he wears when he is out at
night in "Young Blood" and "Bad Day for a Thirst".
It appears to be the same one he had in the pilot. |

His scarf appears to be a
standard red bandana, faded to a soft mauve color.
Like the vest and holster, it is nearly always worn when
he goes outdoors to work, but may not be present when he
is indoors. Unlike Buck's creative scarf maneuvers,
John's scarf is almost always worn tied in the back and
bunched loosely inside his shirt collar. In
"Survival" he uses it for a head covering when he is
without a hat in the desert sun. |

Special Outfits |
John does not have any
special outfits I know of in the first season.
Everything he wears is part of his basic ensemble, just put
together in a variety of combinations. He does, however,
have two episodes where his look is significantly different.
In "Survival" and "Threshold of Courage", due
to the stressful conditions, he is unshaven
and disheveled - definitely not John's usual look. |
