Rancho Montoya
The Lions' Gate entry to Rancho Montoya
(1.09 "Young Blood" and 1.02 "The Arrangement")
Rancho Montoya, the home of
Don Sebastian Montoya and the childhood home of Victoria and Manolito, is
supposed to be located in Sonora, Mexico, about 100 miles from High Chaparral,
usually a two or three day trip. Most exterior set shots of Rancho Montoya
were actually taken at a working mission known as "The White Dove of the
Desert", or San Xavier del Bac, located about 10 miles SW of Tucson.
David Dortort had said that the Lions at the Gate were the perfect detail that he wanted for the grand entrance to the hacienda. But the Lions were about 100 yards from the mission up on a bluff so he had to use different camera angles to make the concept work. He also arranged with the mission to shoot the rear exterior of the mission as the front face of Rancho Montoya. It has iron gates, adobe knee walls and a grand tiled fountain that has since been
renovated. When Rusty visited it with Denise and Pat in 1999 they asked the souvenir clerk how many HC fans come to visit. She said that many still come after all these years, but most are the Indians and devout Catholics who come for special blessings and services that they hold. It is a great place to visit if you are in the Tucson area. Here is a link to a site
