The High Chaparral
"
TV's Buckingest Bronco"

TV Guide, January 13-19, 1968

To begin by alienating all you equestrians out there: Horses can be a pretty mean lot.  They can kick you senseless, bite you bloody and, perhaps worst of all, throw you over on your head.  This is not the sort of thing production companies want done to their lead characters.  The character in this case is Henry Darrow (Manolito Montoya in The High chaparral) and he is supposedly riding a bronco in a corral.

But as you can see (with Leif Erickson, also of HC) the thing he's on bears precious little resemblance to Kelso or Native Dancer.  It's a saddle mounted on a sort of pipe-fitters' teeter-totter; and, as the "rider" sits atop, two prop men pull the rig along while two rock it.  It's great for close-ups, and the star's double can do the actual riding.
