Mark Slade, who plays Billy blue in
The High Chaparral, was art editor of his high school year book; won a Disney
art contest; drew cartoon strips for newspapers in Hamilton and Danvers, Mass.;
and was a political cartoonist for the Worcester Academy. Cartoons are his
"means of self-expression," he says. "I become my own
characters, like Al Capp (Li'l Abner) and Charles Schulz (who really believes
he's Charlie Brown)," Here, Slade depicts Slade as a young innocent
in TV land. |
Because it is not feasible to show
these at full-size, here are the captions:
Left to right, top
1. Acting Teacher:
'Remember, acting is based on truth!'
2. 'Remember, kid, I'm the only truthful actor in this
business!' (the tall character in black is labeled Cameron Mitchell, and the
short character is labeled Dortort with the caption under all three being 'This
series is based on truth!').
3. Mark Slade is the little kid, NBC Executives are the tall composite in blue
and David Dortort is again the little man at the edge of the page. The
caption reads: (Executives) 'Don't cry! Don't laugh! Don't
pout! Don't Scream! And above all, DON'T ACT!'
Left to right, bottom
4. Series stars
recruiting news
about renewal, with arrow to the fence people.
5. Executives making the Big Decision, with arrow to the blue suits.
Caption on right of blue suits reads: "The series is sold. The series is
not sold. The acting is good. The acting is bad. The script is in. The script is
out. The ratings are up. The ratings are down. The series will go 90 minutes.
The series will go an hour. More blood. No blood.' At the bottom, the
Producer is saying, 'This series is based on truth!'
6. The last cartoon is a Fan Letter: 'I dig it when you cry, it turns me
on...your series is based on truth!'
